About the Public Works Department

The Town of Waynesville Public Works Department is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the town’s infrastructure and services. Our TEAM is comprised of highly skilled professionals across various technically specialized divisions, each committed to ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of life for our residents.

Street Division

Street Division

Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and paving of town streets, installation and upkeep of road signs, signals, and striping, maintenance of walkways and trails, snow removal, right-of-way maintenance, and regular street sweeping.

Solid Waste & Recycling

Solid Waste & Recycling

Handles the collection and disposal of residential and commercial trash, recycling, and bulk items. Provides brush and leaf collection services, as well as programs for mulch and composting.

Facilities, Cemeteries & Grounds

Maintains all public buildings, urban forestry, landscaping, and mowing. Oversee cemetery services, main street beautification, and supports town events by ensuring our community spaces are welcoming and well-kept.

Fleet Maintenance

Fleet Maintenance

Ensure all town vehicles and equipment are regularly serviced and safe to operate. Manages preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, state inspections, fuel management, and replacement planning for vehicles and equipment.

Performs maintenance, responds to outages, installs new service lines (both overhead and underground), substation maintenance, street lighting and traffic signal maintenance, and holiday decorations.

Water Treatment Plant

Water Treatment Plant

Oversees water production and treatment, including laboratory testing, chemical storage, and water quality monitoring. Manages regulatory reporting, optimizes treatment processes, and maintains both the facility and watershed.

Water system operation, leak detection and repair, flushing and disinfecting lines, maintaining pumps, tanks, valves, and hydrants, emergency responses and new connections.

Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater Treatment

Processes and treats the town’s wastewater to ensure public health and environmental protection. Responsibilities include laboratory testing, regulatory compliance, process optimization, facility upkeep, and managing byproducts of the treatment process.

Manages the town’s sewer collection system by reducing inflow and infiltration, responding to emergencies, overseeing programs to reduce fats, oils, and grease (FOG), root control, and maintenance including line flushing and new connections.

Stormwater Maintenance

Stormwater Maintenance

Maintains the town’s stormwater drainage systems, this includes routine maintenance, compliance with environmental regulations (MS4), and the construction or replacement of drainage channels, culverts, pipes, and catch basins.

Capital Construction

Plans and executes the replacement and new construction of pipes, hydrants, valves, manholes, service lines, and other critical infrastructure to support growth and maintain reliable services.
