On August 2, 2025, approximately 50,000 gallons of untreated wastewater entered Richland Creek. The bypass occurred due to mechanical failure at the plant’s Headworks. NCDEQ has been notified.

The bypass began at approximately 6:00 PM and was stopped by 7:30 PM. Crews responded immediately to contain and mitigate the discharge.

Environmental Impact and Public Health Guidance

The release consisted primarily of a mixture of untreated wastewater and storm-infiltrated rainwater, which reduced the concentration of harmful pollutants. Nevertheless, contact with surface waters in the affected area should be avoided as a precaution.

Warning signs have been posted at public access points to alert the public of potential health risks.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Water Resources has been notified as required by law, and water quality sampling is being conducted to monitor environmental conditions. The Town is working with regulatory partners to ensure continued protection of public health and the environment.

Continued Commitment

The Town of Waynesville takes this matter seriously and is reviewing operations to reduce the likelihood of future events. Mechanical screenings, debris management, and storm resilience protocols are being assessed for further improvement.

This notice is issued in compliance with North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C and 15A NCAC 02B .0506, which require public notification of any wastewater bypass that may impact surface waters.
