WASTEWATER SPILL ON WAYNESVILLE SEWER LINE

The Town of Waynesville had a discharge of untreated wastewater from a single sanitary sewer line in the following location at 9 Haywood Office Park. The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) began on Friday October 30, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. During periods of intense precipitation and ended at approximately 6:30 a.m. on, Saturday October31, 2020. The total spill amount is estimated at 168,000 gallons.  The discharge ended when rain and stream flows subsided.  Areas will be contained, and affected areas will be cleaned and limed when crews can access the site.   No boil water advisory was or is required as the discharge did not impact any water lines and flow was directly into Richland Creek.

The rainfall total for that time period was over 2.99 inches within a three-day period. Maintenance activities and sewer system rehabilitation are being performed to identify and correct infiltration and inflow sources connected to the sewer system to prevent overflows in the event of future severe natural conditions.  This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes 143-215.  For more information contact Jeff Stines, Public Services Director at (828) 456-3706.
