Parents in our area have a special opportunity to work one on one with their children and develop sports skills through a unique national sports program that’s available right here at the Waynesville Recreation Center. Smart Start Basketball is open to children ages four and five with age as of October 1, 2017.
Parents or another adult must be able to attend one parent meeting on October 9 at 5:45 pm and six one-hour sessions with all players. A variety of innovative basketball products will be utilized to enhance the child’s skill development and fun.
This is a skill-building program between the parent(s) and the child. There are no teams or games.
There are 20 spots available for participants that will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Deadline to register is Monday, October 9, at 5:45 pm.
The cost is $55 registration which includes: mini basketball for dribbling, teslon basketball for passing/catching and shooting, practice cones, equipment bag, participant manual, and Smart Start basketball t-shirt. This will begin October 26 at the Waynesville Recreation Center and will be held from 5:45 to 6:45 pm every Thursday night for six weeks.
Smart Start Programs target children who need to develop basic motor skills such as dribbling / ball handling, shooting, hitting, passing / catching, and running / agility. Smart Start Sports Development will teach children how to develop skills while building their confidence through exercises that become increasingly more difficult as the program progresses and the players show improvement.
Children will enjoy working one on one with their parent(s) and spending quality time together. The program is being administered by the Youth Development branch of the nonprofit National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) and the Waynesville Parks & Recreation Department.
